Sanjiv Handa, a wellknown East Bay activist, gadfly, and critique-er of politicians, who was also a journalist and published the East Bay News Service, died on December 27th at a friend's home in Oakland.  Only 55, he had been sick with severe flu, according to family members. No foul play was reported by the Oakland Police.

About 300 people, including several politicians and news reporters, attended services at the Chapel of the Angels in Fremont. Handa, who was born in Chandigarh, India, immigrated when he was eight, in 1966, with his family to Oakland. They later moved to Hayward.

West Oakland Redevelopment Map Released

Supervisor Keith Carson and East Bay Economic Development Alliance (East Bay EDA) Director Karen Engel addressed the July General Members meeting of the West Oakland Commerce Association at its monthly meeting at the Buttercup Grill. Supervisor Carson shared his role in the County. He serves over one-third of Oakland including parts of Montclair & San Antonio, Berkeley, and Albany.

The City of Oakland wishes to commend BNSF Railway on the cooperative effort it has made with the City of Oakland and the West Oakland Business Alert Committee, in particular, on the cleanup of approximately 10 acres of its land along Wood Street, in the upper Mandela Parkway area. Following several months of discussions and cooperative planning with the City's Business Alert Committee, BNSF requested that is contractor, Floyd Harris of Fresno CA, do "whatever it takes" to clean up a long neglected stretch of the Upper Wood Street area.

That area, directly below the I-580/I-80 "MacArthur Maze" freeway, leads directly into Emeryville and is now the rear access entry to the new Oakland/Emeryville Target store, slated for opening in March 2011.

Delicious Nutritious and Cook! recently opened its doors at 3310 Peralta Street with Nona Lim, owner of "Cook!" and Storn White, owner of "Delicious Nutritious," who partnered in early 2010, jointly operating a commercial kitchen there.

Ongoing West Oakland Programs

  • New Artist Residency Program
    Paul Dresher Dance/Art Feb 2012 Residency

    This residency is designed for early to mid-career Northern Californian artists working in time-based arts. In February, 2012, 4 to 6 local artists will use the PD Ensemble's well-equipped rehearsal studio fulltime for up to four consecutive weeks (April December) as well as our fabrication shop, state-of-the-art sound, lighting, projection, and recording equipment, and if needed, technical, financial, and managerial consultation.

    ARC will support artists who are actively exploring new aesthetic and pushing the boundaries of conventional forms and media working in the following areas: music, theater, dance, media art and interdisciplinary performance; experimenting with new creative concepts, approaches, or method; researching similar or preparing an existing work for its premiere (although facilities cannot be used for public performances). Artists must provide all their own housing and transportation.
