A Vietnam vet, Tom Leyton lives in his family home with his outgoing sister, Caroline, and devotes his time to raising silkworms. A nosy neighbor warns Joseph and his mum about rumors that Tom was asked to leave his teaching position due to improper behavior toward a student, but Joseph perseveres, with Caroline's encouragement.

The silkworm theme in this book is beautiful and finely woven sorry into the book. His world changes, however, when he is asked to draw a portrait of his mysterious neighbour Tom Leyton, a Vietnam veteran who for thirty years has lived alone with his sister Caroline, raising his silkworms and hiding from prying eyes. These dreams suddenly return when Joseph is forced to face his fears and doubts regarding Tom Leyton. Interesting parallels drawn between the life cycle of silkworms and the character Tom.
