Western Digital My Book Studio Edition II 6TB Review

After opening the case from the top and unscrewing the top retaining plate the original 1TB drives can be pulled out. They are very snug so it took a little bit of force to extract them from the case, like pulling teeth :P. Here is what the case look like without the drives. It is pretty minimalistic. One logic board right in the middle in between the drives.

The drive is fast and affordable. It runs hot, seems buggy at times, and doesn't come with an eSATA cable. The Bottom Line The My Book Studio Edition II makes a decent direct-attached storage solution for those who need to extend a computer's storage space or want a large backup drive. The drive's rather buggy firmware might turn many users away, however. It comes with multiple types of peripheral connections and allows users to replace its internal hard drives easily, as long as they use PowerGreen hard drives made by Western Digital.

  1. The drives run reasonably cool thanks to their sub RPM spindle speed and well ventilated chassis. Hi guys. I will stay with my FW for now, if needed I will upgrade to something new : Rep!

  2. There's no impact on performance, with a vertical status light that pulsates up and down when the drive is performing various functions. The unit itself is sleek, generic looking AC adapter. All this makes the drive seem "buggy" at times. The druves adapter is a pretty standard, just a strange issue worth noting.

  3. The unit itself is sleek, with a vertical status light that pulsates up and down when the drive is performing various functions. From a design perspective, the highlight is certainly the fact that the drives are user accessible - without being visually distracting - via a lid that opens with moderate pressure on the front edge. 😘
